To be an animal is to be in possession of a physical body, a body which can eat, drink and sleep; it is also to be embedded in a worldwide network of ecosystems. When every human body has an uncanny global presence, how do we live with ourselves?”<br />From a presentation of Daisy Hildyards essay and book The Second Body, Fitzcarraldo Editions.<br /><br />You are surfing waves with your first body. And it is about visual representation when the first body gets photographed. </p><p>Your second body is about a large number of connections that is best represented through calculations and numbers of effects and consequences from your way of living.<br /><br />In surfing, the first body is getting celebrated (as well as in Yoga). Sometimes in ways that deny and hide the second body. Is your first body, or your second body the more political one? Is the picture of your first body of more impact and more political than your first body itself? Is your second body the most political one? </p><p>Is your first body, or your second body the best surfer? Is your first body or your second body a colonial surfer?</p><div>There are a lot of people trimming and exercising their first bodies without worrying about how their second bodies are unhealthy in obesity and overweight.</div><div><br /></div><div>Is this a helpful way of thinking? The more privileged you are, the easier it is to take care of your first body, while your second body tends to go unhealthy.</div><div><br /></div><div><img alt="Planet Earth." class="block-image-ads hero-image" data-original-mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/3upZx2gxxLpW7MBbnKYQLH.jpg" data-pin-media="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/3upZx2gxxLpW7MBbnKYQLH.jpg" sizes="(min-width: 1000px) 970px, calc(100vw - 40px)" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/3upZx2gxxLpW7MBbnKYQLH-320-80.jpg" srcset="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/3upZx2gxxLpW7MBbnKYQLH-320-80.jpg 320w, https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/3upZx2gxxLpW7MBbnKYQLH-480-80.jpg 480w, https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/3upZx2gxxLpW7MBbnKYQLH-650-80.jpg 650w, https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/3upZx2gxxLpW7MBbnKYQLH-970-80.jpg 970w, https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/3upZx2gxxLpW7MBbnKYQLH-1024-80.jpg 1024w" /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>Colonial Surferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09347775779452542336noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1011518607847956649.post-88569445308781532722021-04-11T01:19:00.004-07:002021-04-11T01:23:46.687-07:00Diana Vreeland on surfing<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Qu7rc0PUOmo" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe></div> <p></p>Colonial Surferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09347775779452542336noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1011518607847956649.post-73779164482868923832020-12-17T02:47:00.002-08:002020-12-17T02:48:42.681-08:0010. HEROES - “All we do is surf ”<p> The video HEROES “All we do is surf ” is an early mashup* work from 2004. I have been setting rules while editing the material consisting of surf films, and the most important rule has been about deleting all scenes with surf waves. By regularly doing this, other parts of the films are getting compressed and more in focus. Perspective on the homosocial community, gender roles, representation, and power perspectives are being clarified and perceived to be overplayed. <br />At the same time is the video becoming something that is very much like every day popular culture. But since the intended main content of these videos is missing, the viewer’s perspective changes. I want to shift the viewer’s gaze to a problematizing and deconstructing perspective. </p><p>The material used is films that show impressive waves, cool maneuvers and a quick portrayal of surfers and lifestyles. Films that are there to inspire and sell the sport sponsored by various companies. I’ve grown up with watching these types of videos in skateboarding and snowboarding. Films that are done through a collage way of film-editing, rather than being about narratives. But the perspective became different for me when I saw surf films in public in Bali, Indonesia, 2001. Unequal representation became very obvious. Such as racial profiling while portraying surfers travelling the world. This is something I later explored more closely when I studied at the School of Photography in Gothenburg University 2004-2007. </p><p>When our surroundings are getting photographed and filmed, it is not only about depiction. Reality is getting generated through the mediated perspectives and their structures. This exerts displacements and involves performative action. We are often blind to its ideology when this happens through what is ideal, or something we experience as just normal.</p><p><i><span style="font-size: x-small;">*Video mashup as a cultural phenomenon on the Internet grew strongly during the early 2000s but died out a few years ago on platforms such as Youtube through unfavorable copyright filtering systems. At the same time, there are specific laws written today to protect mashup as cultural expression and art form. But some online filters are today more restrictive and ungainly than the laws.</span></i></p><p><i><span style="font-size: x-small;"></span></i></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i><span style="font-size: x-small;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KJL_UpzTl54/X9swLENqXfI/AAAAAAAAA34/u1deus18BuQOZ1k3aa8U3L3bQDmWYMCJgCLcBGAsYHQ/s410/Stepping-Stones-14nr3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="328" data-original-width="410" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KJL_UpzTl54/X9swLENqXfI/AAAAAAAAA34/u1deus18BuQOZ1k3aa8U3L3bQDmWYMCJgCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Stepping-Stones-14nr3.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></i><br /></div><p><i><span style="font-size: x-small;"></span></i></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i><span style="font-size: x-small;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ur2WgUnJ-_Q/X9swQgnW0vI/AAAAAAAAA38/e-G7zDDdcZoENGlSodA729PmlRlJ4ASsACLcBGAsYHQ/s410/VTS_01_2-Blue-5.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="328" data-original-width="410" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ur2WgUnJ-_Q/X9swQgnW0vI/AAAAAAAAA38/e-G7zDDdcZoENGlSodA729PmlRlJ4ASsACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/VTS_01_2-Blue-5.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></i></div><i><span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BaTecg-fgeI/X9sw436sW9I/AAAAAAAAA4I/nXanqEqbbcIY5VM6c5HHhHp5nMIH8nkHgCLcBGAsYHQ/s410/Stepping-Stones-15nr5.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="328" data-original-width="410" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BaTecg-fgeI/X9sw436sW9I/AAAAAAAAA4I/nXanqEqbbcIY5VM6c5HHhHp5nMIH8nkHgCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Stepping-Stones-15nr5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div></span></i><p></p><p><i><span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></i></p><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/DCxs-7ZqU0I" width="560"></iframe></div><br /><p></p><p>Link to Youtube-video: <a href="https://youtu.be/DCxs-7ZqU0I " target="_blank">https://youtu.be/DCxs-7ZqU0I </a><br /></p>Colonial Surferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09347775779452542336noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1011518607847956649.post-51120030303396442722020-11-29T09:00:00.003-08:002020-12-02T00:59:37.413-08:0011. complement color against the single-colored surfaces. This turns into a
closed circuit in light. Precise complementary colors and photographs
that do not seek to capture moments but instead exact meetings – a
sculpture of photography. </span><br /></p><p>Photography as a medium has, in our time, begun to lose its connection with a historical past more and more. It is no longer about when photographs are getting shot that is essential, but rather when they are getting shared and in what contexts. If you push this a bit in theory, the historical nostalgic aspect, which was previously characteristic of photography, changes and becomes instead a constant here and now. <br /><br />On the walls, these photographs hang in different constellations, and in different numbers, depending on how they play with the rest of the room. In terms of content, they repeat exactly, except that the colors differ considerably. The exact color coordinates are also inscribed in the titles. The images consist of monochrome surfaces and on each surface the word Perfect is written with Helvetica as the font.</p><p>Technically, they are made digitally, and then printed at a professional photo lab. Although the light is important, there is no camera involved and as a photographic genre it is about technical images.<br /> <br />The pictures represent an exact meaning and content. As written; It is not a photographic practice attempting to convey moments. These are photographs that want to create exact meetings. <br /></p>Colonial Surferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09347775779452542336noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1011518607847956649.post-70863776924600600422020-09-09T05:41:00.009-07:002020-11-29T01:51:08.859-08:0012. I am researching the island of Bali as a global node of mediation. I am doing this through photography, focusing mostly on already existing images in public space. <br />Bali is an island where the effects of globalization are clearly visible. With this project, I depict and ask questions about the globalized information society. The project is about Bali, but at the same time about the world we all live in and share, but not in equal matters. The situation is far from fair. Bali is a small island where several of the world’s richest investors own land. Over time, more and more gated communities and fenced areas have been developed and built on the island. At the same time with those barriers and walls, there are ideas of freedom, liberalism, and boundlessness getting expressed and fabricated on Bali in a neo-liberal manner.<div><br /><div><img border="0" data-original-height="1448" data-original-width="2048" height="283" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-I5gsiOxmNdg/X1jG4kOgkCI/AAAAAAAAA1M/HcfZKwykz5sasaYw3uJ9KxtKs8qAoGWnQCLcBGAsYHQ/w400-h283/There%2Bare%2Bno%2Blocals%2BEng%2BVer757_Blog.jpg" width="400" /><div><br />When I organize a material of very many pictures that forms the basis of the project The Global Village - Bali, I use a program that does not operate perfectly all the time: the program freezes and the screen glitches. When I on one occasion could read Massage written in one of these glitches, I made a screenshot. Although I have read Marshall McLuhan, it was this picture that taught me that the title of McLuhan’s best-known book is The Medium is The Massage, not The Medium is The Message, which is his theoretical thesis and one of McLuhan's most famous statements. Although I know that the program malfunction, I continue to use it to generate more glitches. The glitches are of importance since they show the interface of the images that is otherwise hidden in the illusion of the photographs. It is similar to when I photograph pictures and the viewer becomes aware of the surfaces of the images, the scratches and the materiality. They are not see-through images.<br /></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rWOeLe-3t8E/X1jHOZPicRI/AAAAAAAAA1U/TsB8TWNISwUIRCqP5lfrRG8-ulK7lyXJACLcBGAsYHQ/s1957/There%2Bare%2Bno%2Blocals%2BEng%2BVer759_Besk.jpg" style="clear: left; A person puts down and leaves a backpack in the airport. Before leaving, the person photographs the bag. This action shows the surveillance cameras that everything is intentional and that the backpack is not forgotten. The bag is closed and locked with a padlock in the zipper opening. This means that it cannot be easily opened. The backpack is meant as an attack in the airport.<br /><br />“For security reasons, baggage left unattended will be removed and destroyed.”<br /><br />Studies of art, photography, postcolonial theory and my own experience of traveling as a tourist in Asia are behind my decision to perform the action. I am convinced that the action is worth doing for a number of important reasons. Placing the bag like this at Charles de Gaulle airport can scare, shock and hurt individuals. A part of the airport may be blocked by the security guards and people on their way to or from their flights might be disturbed. The ethical problem of exposing other people to my actions is included in my calculations.<br /><br />I justify the action with theories of how the system itself is so much more violent, wrong and destructive.<br /><br />The contents of the backpack are pictures. These images consist of scanned material from travel brochures and travel commercials printed on photo paper and then cropped to a 10x15cm format. Nothing but a large number of these pictures lies in the bag. The selection is made to represent a typical representation of the world through a European travel commercial perspective. The backpack contains something that the tourism industry generates, images that constitute the current world order.<br /><br />The security system, the structure, and the strictly disciplined architecture are tangible. I’m up in this with intentions about it as art. Flying with the bag containing only pictures is part of a performance work. Passing the bag through the X-ray machine at the airport worries me. Perhaps I will face suspicion and questions. I’m afraid to be remembered, or that security staff should notice this as something strange so that I can later be linked to the Charles de Gaulle airport attack and seized as a terrorist.</div><div> </div><div><i>A performance work that asks questions about power-relations,

But if a house is considered to be isolated from a center, its economic value will fall. More recently, from a global perspective, statistics have shown the connection between houses located near good surf spots and a rising economic value.<br /></div><p>Bali is a small island in Indonesia that has been completely transformed through the tourism industry. The mass tourism of this island began with wave surf tourism. And it’s a common saying that it started after the premiere of the surf movie Morning of The Earth (1972). The film contains footage from Bali as an unexploited beautiful and harmonic paradise with amazing waves. Bali has since developed into a Mecca for surf culture.<br /> <br />A lot of Balinese locals are currently protesting publicly against the extensive exploitation of the island. They point to the international tourism industry, the ruling economic elite and the political power of Jakarta as responsible. The problems that the locals address, among other things, are that they themselves become invisible, run over by the ruling elite, without getting their own say.<br /><br />As an artist I explore colonial heritage and trends through a globalized surf culture. Is surf culture so dominant that in some cases it displaces other cultural expressions?<br /> <br />I recently met an established art curator (producer) from Jakarta, Indonesia. She did a presentation of her work in Stockholm, Sweden. One of her subject matters was Indonesia’s current relation to a colonial history and the colonizers. <br /><br />During the presentation I wrote down notes and some questions to ask. My first question was about the protest-movement “Tolak-Reklamasi” in Bali. She didn’t really want to say or answer anything about this ongoing movement and she declared the Island to exoticized and too much of bad taste to discuss. My answer back was that the Island still exist no matter if you consider it bad taste or not. <br />In a critical part of a discussion that followed from this, the curator pronounces something very remarkable with stating these exact words: “There are no locals in Bali.” <br />I got stunned by the statement. What does she really mean? No matter how you twist and turn on this statement, it is very problematic and oppressive. Not at least when one of the main messages of the demonstrating Balinese is: “We exist!”<br /> The Balinese is a minority (Hinduism religious minority) in Indonesia.<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-__0TWiaCkcM/X1Np2jcHdQI/AAAAAAAAAzc/JPpo2Jh6iFgTaRfj5On_p6M6vMu0YFO8ACPcBGAYYCw/s1900/IMG_0482.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1267" data-original-width="1900" height="416" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-__0TWiaCkcM/X1Np2jcHdQI/AAAAAAAAAzc/JPpo2Jh6iFgTaRfj5On_p6M6vMu0YFO8ACPcBGAYYCw/w625-h416/IMG_0482.jpg" width="625" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-o5d_wygrjlk/X0lyLAJ4TFI/AAAAAAAAAys/STwfsMzN0DE6vPRDi9yUPon7l6ZAlzxyACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_1105.JPG" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1365" height="410" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-o5d_wygrjlk/X0lyLAJ4TFI/AAAAAAAAAys/STwfsMzN0DE6vPRDi9yUPon7l6ZAlzxyACLcBGAsYHQ/w274-h410/IMG_1105.JPG" width="274" /></a></div><p>The segregation and gentrification in Bali are evident today.
Gentrification is a displacement process. Those who are not financially
strong enough to buy houses, pay rent or live the everyday life in an
area are getting displaced. Profits on rising square meter prices
control the development. This leads to consequences for the cultural
identity of places since the variation in residents is replaced by one
and the same class. In certain areas of Bali it means that the
tourism-industry is pushing away the locals. In general terms is
gentrification processes especially evident and strong in central
cities, but also along ocean coastal stretches.<br /><br />Is it possible to
say that surf culture is part of, and accelerates, gentrification
processes? This considering how places around good surf spots are
attractive and how they are used. Those areas are nowadays, in cases
when there are no laws protecting them, getting privatized. Is access to
the great open sea and the waves a class issue in an economically
neo-liberal world? </p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-glgFu7FhCO0/X1Nr2WTLYWI/AAAAAAAAAzs/lJZ1pH_pKEIWSpd4hW_YduAf5b4VEp1NACLcBGAsYHQ/s1900/IMG_1731.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1267" data-original-width="1900" height="416" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-glgFu7FhCO0/X1Nr2WTLYWI/AAAAAAAAAzs/lJZ1pH_pKEIWSpd4hW_YduAf5b4VEp1NACLcBGAsYHQ/w625-h416/IMG_1731.jpg" width="625" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1sGlaNqKEpI/X1NsDb4W5cI/AAAAAAAAAzw/44T7fgvziMcShb2sQp99p63w9XbmGQu1wCLcBGAsYHQ/s1350/There_are_no_locals_in_Bali.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1350" data-original-width="1080" height="256" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1sGlaNqKEpI/X1NsDb4W5cI/AAAAAAAAAzw/44T7fgvziMcShb2sQp99p63w9XbmGQu1wCLcBGAsYHQ/w205-h256/There_are_no_locals_in_Bali.jpg" width="205" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><p><br /></p>Colonial Surferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09347775779452542336noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1011518607847956649.post-76551869140589794692020-08-28T12:48:00.011-07:002020-08-28T13:05:45.641-07:00There are no locals?<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-y5HGi8wfEdQ/X0leJ4MUIVI/AAAAAAAAAxY/JrYyNGGGUfUDUGjYGLkxrb9UZ6oylLmsQCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/There%2Bare%2Bno%2Blocals%2BEng%2BVer7.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1448" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-y5HGi8wfEdQ/X0leJ4MUIVI/AAAAAAAAAxY/JrYyNGGGUfUDUGjYGLkxrb9UZ6oylLmsQCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/There%2Bare%2Bno%2Blocals%2BEng%2BVer7.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p><span style="color: red;">PDF: <a href="http://www.kristoffersvenberg.com/PDF/There%20are%20no%20locals%20K%20Svenberg%20Eng.pdf" target="_blank"><span><span>There are no locals, Artworks overview [Language: English] </span></span></a><span><span><a href="http://www.kristoffersvenberg.com/PDF/There%20are%20no%20locals%20K%20Svenberg%20Eng.pdf" target="_blank">– Download PDF</a></span></span></span> <br /></p><p><span style="color: white;">This is a collection of my art-works that relate to surfing in different ways. Surfing is part of pop-culture in the contemporary and placed in these projects as something that seeks to reach a wider audience than most regular art audiences. Surfing can be the key subject matter, but also serves as a medium, a materiality, and something to read symbolically and metaphorically as a power-position. My departure into the projects is through photography, problematizing what mediation is and how representation occurs. Things are always more complex than the representation.<br />These projects are dealing with inquires on cultural imperialism, ideals, norms, gender, heritage from <br />colonialism, post-colonial theory and gentrification processes. </span><br /></p><span style="color: red;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BDNIAdsFGCg/X0li2Bfl3uI/AAAAAAAAAyA/6IzCECptMXkp9mGgsLcAHLtzg55kr3frwCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/There%2Bare%2Bno%2Blocals%2BEng%2BVer74.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1448" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BDNIAdsFGCg/X0li2Bfl3uI/AAAAAAAAAyA/6IzCECptMXkp9mGgsLcAHLtzg55kr3frwCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/There%2Bare%2Bno%2Blocals%2BEng%2BVer74.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />PDF: <a href="http://www.kristoffersvenberg.com/PDF/There%20are%20no%20locals%20K%20Svenberg%20Eng.pdf" target="_blank"><span><span>There are no locals, Artworks overview [Language: English] </span></span></a><span><span><a href="http://www.kristoffersvenberg.com/PDF/There%20are%20no%20locals%20K%20Svenberg%20Eng.pdf" target="_blank">– Download PDF</a></span></span></span><p></p><p> </p>Colonial Surferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09347775779452542336noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1011518607847956649.post-60380652023272634032020-08-23T02:05:00.000-07:002020-08-23T02:05:25.790-07:00Disjunktion<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oYmvvnpD7VU/X0Iw7KcyaAI/AAAAAAAAAxA/olO1A-djfGQijb7WssCUCfrZ1fWkXYKXgCLcBGAsYHQ/s2000/Disjunction.jpg" style="clear: left; display: block; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; padding: 1em 0px; text-align: none;"><img alt="" border="0" data-original-height="1333" data-original-width="2000" height="416" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oYmvvnpD7VU/X0Iw7KcyaAI/AAAAAAAAAxA/olO1A-djfGQijb7WssCUCfrZ1fWkXYKXgCLcBGAsYHQ/w625-h416/Disjunction.jpg" width="625" /></a></div>Colonial Surferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09347775779452542336noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1011518607847956649.post-48602614370997543642020-07-26T02:21:00.003-07:002020-09-09T05:46:08.829-07:00Colonial Surfer - The ReSearch on Twitter<a class="twitter-timeline" data-widget-id="334061035763941377" href="https://twitter.com/Colonial_Surfer">Tweets by @Colonial_Surfer</a>

"THE SEAS ARE RISING AND SO ARE WE.<br />
<br />
Our coastlines are under siege from the impacts of pollution, ocean acidification, climate change and fossil fuels. Rising sea levels and increasingly powerful storms have had a devastating effect on our shorelines and are putting our beaches and local surf spots at risk.<br />
With these harsh environmental realities in mind, we’ve teamed up with the <a href="https://surfrider.eu/">Surfrider Foundation</a> to create a wetsuit that addresses these threats head on. Designed with insights from their leading environmental scientists and studies, we are proud to introduce the revolutionary <a href="http://risingseas.vissla.com/"><span style="color: #eeeeee;">Vissla</span></a> Rising Seas wetsuit.<br />
The Rising Seas wetsuit features our most advanced technical attributes that meet our The intention: to protect and inform surfers of the presence of harmful bacteria, viruses, algae blooms, oil spills and high levels of run-off pollution in the water that might affect the outcome of their surf session." <br />

No matter how I turn this in context, I do this from an outside perspective, but at the same time, especially from what I represent, from the inside. I'm not an active Christian at all, but from a global perspective, regarding representation, I am. But is Christian religion the crucial point of departure in this work?</div>

In 1936, Walter Benjamin wrote the classic and often referenced text <i>The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction</i>. Boris Groys has more recent written <i>Religion in the age of digital reproduction (2009).</i></div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: left;">
The philosopher and the artist Groys writes, among other things, that religion and conspiracy theories are two things that really benefit from the Internet and the network community. He believes that the spread and rise of these have increased significantly with our digitized era. Religion is facing a renaissance through digital social media. New forms of religion and religiosity are being developed.</div>

<div class="p1" style="text-align: left;">
The Internet in its structure benefits private, unconditional and sovereign freedom before scientific, conditional, institutional freedom, or sharing of legitimized viewpoints and perspectives. It is the unconditional and not proven information that can more easily and without resistance spread through the Internet. I also want to point out that this goes on in the market-liberal economy. It is information that in a superficial way fits easier within different situations, this is because it’s not regulated and therefore becomes more fast-formulated. It becomes competitive in spite of its major shortcomings, and Groys’ declares it as survival of the fittest in accordance with a Darwinist perspective. It finds favorable positions, diversity of positions, precisely through how it is not anchored and thus can move unlimitedly.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></div>

The reason for my work as a missionary for Surfing The Nations is that I see it as a performance work part of my art practice. There is nobody in place who knows about my intentions. My role could possibly be described in other ways than an artist. I'm there as a surfer. I'm there as a missionary. I'm there as an anthropologist. I'm there as a tourist. I'm there as a journalist. At the same time, none of these roles are true.</div>

When I’m leaving the church and the area I feel a bit bestial. I write bestial (a beast) here with a link to how artists work with a context in real life, and then symbolically cannibalize on it to talk about something else. It’s a consumption of meaning, consumption of the environment and the people in order to be used as a representation. A violence that is close to hand within photographic and recording techniques. During our fairly personal conversation, I had placed a sound recorder switched on in a textile bag. Did I lie to this priest, I ask myself then? The priest who even may have baptized me at exactly on this spot in Onsala.</div>

We get to hear from Niklas and Kristin that we are about to paint and renovate the village's hairdressing salon. The salon is very small but centrally located in Arugam Bay. What we are about to do is explained as extensive aid work. After an internal meeting in our compounds, we go to the barber to tell him about our plans.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></div>
<div class="p3">
Niklas talks to the hairdresser in an educating manner and tone. We listen behind him almost like supervision in the small room. The discussion is mostly, or almost extensively a monologue. The words get outspoken from Niklas in a slightly superior jargon. But he is also adapting the words to a kind of made-up slang English for someone who isn’t so good at the language. Niklas is seeking for approval while explaining in sweeping gestures about what he, or we, are about to do in the barbershop.</div>
<div class="p3">
It goes on in a way that resembles how a seller tries to convince a potential customer. The technique is based on excluding other possible alternatives.</div>

Since it´s not the hairdresser himself who owns the place, the decision requires the involvement of more people. But we are determined and have already decided. Within the group, we are told by Niklas and Kristin that we are going to do something very good, a good deed, and something that will affect the community in the right way. We are going to spread a positive message in the village.</div>
<div class="p4">
<br /></div>
<div class="p3">
Niklas to the hairdresser again:</div>
<div class="p4">
<i></i><br /></div>
<div class="p3">
<i>- We wanna help to fix, but, we need to know.</i></div>
<div class="p3">
<i>We need to, we look in the shelves see how much money.</i></div>
<div class="p3">
<i>How much money cost.</i></div>
<div class="p3">
<i>We will see, cause we have very little money.</i></div>
<div class="p3">
<i>Not much money this year, so not much money.</i></div>
<div class="p3">
<i>But we wanna start with the painting.</i></div>
<div class="p4">
<br /></div>
<div class="p3">
It’s going to be obvious for everyone who passes that we are working in the room. At first, there is a curtain in the large window towards the street but we take it down. The hairdresser is someone that many from the village visit regularly. The plan is that the hairdresser's customers will see how the place has been painted and redone, and then stories will be told about our group. And people will see us working from the street.</div>
<div class="p4">
<br /></div>
<div class="p3">
One of Surfing the Nations many taglines, for example, used in their videos: <i>Be the change you want to see in the world.</i> This is explained as a Mahatma Gandhi quotation. It's an incorrect quote that has become viral on the internet. I don’t know exactly where it originates and how it began to spread. What Ghandi really said that gave rise to this is: <i>We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change.</i></div>
<div class="p3">
Gandhi expressed something that is somewhat more complex, humble, listening to the environment and self-reflective criticism. It is about thinking about your own role and changing yourself, rather than focusing on changing the world through your deeds and your role. How we act in Sri Lanka and Arugam Bay, our way of thinking and our roles is supposed to change the surrounding place.</div>
<div class="p4">
<br /></div>
<div class="p3">
In proportion to the size of the hairdressing salon, we are way too many on-site working. The small room is full of our bodies in action. We begin our work by emptying the salon on things. For example, there is a large amount and variety of posters on the walls in organic patterns.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></div>
<div class="p4">
<br /></div>
<div class="p3">
<i>- Is it ok to tear these down?</i> Is Kristin asking Niklas.</div>
<div class="p4">
<br /></div>
<div class="p3">
<i>- Yes.</i> Do Niklas answer frankly.</div>
<div class="p4">
<br /></div>
<div class="p3">
We tear down the posters from the walls, an act that makes them crumpled and torn apart. What these pictures mean or are of value to the hairdresser is nothing we really take into account. He might have collected these for years. Posters that soon lie in a pile on the floor.</div>
<div class="p4">
<br /></div>
<div class="p3">
At a rather late stage of the process, when we have already have decided the color, Kristin asks while the hairdresser is in the room if Niklas knows how the hairdresser actually wants it.</div>
<div class="p4">
<br /></div>
<div class="p3">
<i>- Ask him. </i>Niklas reply very card.</div>
<div class="p4">
<br /></div>
<div class="p3">
At this point, I think I've got some understanding of how Niklas thinks. As prejudice and pretext from me I think that Niklas doesn’t expect the hairdresser to answer something clearly. That is an argument from his side about why we should control and decide the design.</div>
<div class="p4">
<br /></div>
<div class="p3">
<i>- What colors do you want in here? - Do you like green? </i>Kristin says to the hairdresser. The barber doesn´t know this, but green is the color we’ve already chosen. The hairdresser shakes his head and expresses something far out with his eyes.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></div>
<div class="p4">
<br /></div>
<div class="p3">
<i>- Do you like orange?</i></div>
<div class="p4">
<br /></div>
<div class="p3">
He does not answer and Kristin continues.</div>
<div class="p4">
<br /></div>
<div class="p3">
<i>- Black? Black everywhere?</i></div>
<div class="p4">
<br /></div>
<div class="p3">
<i>- Black? No! </i>Says the hairdresser.</div>
<div class="p4">
<br /></div>
<div class="p3">
When Kristin then asks about the hairdresser's favorite color, he points up at one of the walls and says blue. The cerise cold blue color in which the room is already painted in is the hairdresser's favorite color. It’s a pleasant tone in a place with a sunny, warm and hot climate.</div>
<div class="p4">
<br /></div>
<div class="p5">
Like I mentioned before, the argument raised about why we should paint in a different color, according to Niklas and Kristin, is because the hairdresser doesn’t have a strong opinion. He doesn’t know what he wants. We know the good taste and that is part of what we bring as our positive message. With scrapers, we slowly scratch away the blue color from the walls. There is no air conditioning in the room and we are not used to working in this heat. Sweat pours down our bodies while we work and many of the men in our group are dressed in surf-shorts and no top.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></div>
<div class="p6">
<br /></div>
<div class="p5">
After a while, I'm told to stop scraping the paint off the walls. We are going to skip this step and paint directly on top of the old surface. This is an approach that every painter knows will lead to bad quality. A way of cheating that doesn’t get the paint to attach very well to the wall and will make it likely to fall off in the near future. At first, during the process of scraping, I protest and want to continue the work until it’s done. But I give up when Niklas explains that we won’t have enough time to complete our work. We don’t have time because we have other things to do here in Arugam Bay during our stay. In a few days, a surf contest will begin as part of the international surfing tour. We are aiming to attend the beach and spread the word about <i>Surfing The Nations</i>. In the barbershop, we fill up the worst holes in the room with putty knives before we start painting with a clear strong lime green color. The green is a bit similar to the color that usually appears on green screens.</div>
<div class="p4">
<br /></div>
<div class="p5">
We are then standing in a green room. A green-room within wave surfing is when you are in a good surf position inside a barreling wave. A reference in movie making is green rooms or green screens that are used to film things, or people so that the motive can be edited into any other visual context and background. A green room is also what you find backstage at a theater.</div>
<div class="p6">
<br /></div>
<div class="p5">
We also build a very simple wall in the room and put up simple self-made shelves on it. Once the room is painted completely green, we also add straight horizontal brown-orange and white stripes. We paint these across all the walls of the room. We make the brown-orange stripes wide and the white ones more narrow. If you compare with the free organic style from earlier with a lot of colorful posters on the walls, it is now possible to resemble the room more as a normative Ikea interior. But the room is quite a bit more exaggerated than the ones appearing in the IKEA catalogs. The stripes that go through all the walls of the room define the room and make it very definite. It is like an already set room and becomes a very closed body.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></div>
<div class="p6">
<br /></div>
<div class="p5">
The stripes that are in the room now can be linked to sports culture. They look like typical sportswear patterns that for example appear on t-shirts, polo shirts or sport pants, etc. And a reference through us in the room is that it looks like something connected to wave surf culture. Such as minimalist painted landscapes, sea horizons, and sunsets. But the stripes and the contrast in colors also resemble borders in a sports playing field, such as a field for soccer, tennis, basketball and so on.</div>
<div class="p6">
<br /></div>
<div class="p5">
It is also noticeable how the pattern on the walls resembles the style of modernism painting, and then a lot of modernist abstract paintings in especially the late modernism era after World War II. In the 1930s radical modernist art provoked the Nazis.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></div>
<div class="p6">
<br /></div>
<div class="p5">
And the Nazis adapted art they did not like, the modernism, as degenerated art and they persecuted designated artists. Artists had to flee from the Nazis.</div>
<div class="p6">
<br /></div>
<div class="p5">
After World War II, in late modernism, a lot of paintings were done with monochrome paint fields. Painting would then, within the dominant discourse that was pronounced through art criticism and theory, preferably only be surface and paint. Artists who were abstract expressionists and formalists were busy searching for the essence of the medium. At the same time, the artists often had magnificent existential or spiritual motives for their works. Those for the time radical but aesthetically rather simple works of color fields became very popular within the art scene in the 40s and 50s. It has been read historically, among other things, as a search for clean projection surfaces of a bright future after a devastating horrible and traumatizing world war. Today, it’s possible to see similar abstract aesthetics as something very common in commercial contexts, and as a pattern in modern contemporary architecture.</div>
<div class="p6">
<br /></div>
<div class="p5">
How those abstract color fields as an aesthetic expression in the contemporary are read as something apolitical is part of what makes them very popular nowadays I think. But monochrome painting and abstract expressionism in the 50s and 60s had a role in the Cold War. The CIA funded abstract expressionism and marketed American art to place the United States as a culturally free country. This was done without the artist’s active participation or knowledge and they became part of a propaganda machine. What matters for the CIA's choice of art genre to support economically were that the content of the abstract expressionism paintings themselves were insignificant political narratives.</div>
<div class="p6">
<br /></div>
<div class="p5">
Regardless of where the aesthetic originates from or how it is charged with meaning, it is now placed in this room to make a difference, it is said within our group that this aesthetic will lead to a change. Through my actions, it is being connected with a socially embedded art project. It becomes something to read as a representation, to be interpreted and examined symbolically. It is us who bring up stories and say our meanings. We are directing. What is then almost bluntly clear is that the pattern of the walls is the same color scheme as for Surfing The Nations headquarters in Hawaii. And the same goes for a large hand-painted <i>Surfing The Nations</i> sign at the organization's enclosed area here in Arugam Bay.</div>
<div class="p6">
<br /></div>
<div class="p7">
On the glass window, which is the wall facing the street, the name of the hairdressing salon is written, as well as other information, in colorful ornamental letters. It is written both in the Latin letters and with letters from the Sinhala alphabet. We are scraping away each part of those letters and words, carefully, as we renovate.</div>
<div class="p8">
<br /></div>
<div class="p7">
The village's artist and designer, who most probably has painted these letters as well, is saying that he wants to do the job with a new design and also a new sign. But Niklas and Kristin have decided that a girl from France will do the job. I never meet her, but the intended girl apparently works as an illustrator and a designer in her home country. The job here is probably something <i>Surfing The Nations</i> won't pay anything for. They will explain the contribution as a kind of voluntary aid work.</div>
<div class="p8">
<br /></div>
<div class="p7">
The village local artist doesn´t give up and he keep on trying to get the assignment. Then Niklas asks him to bring along a portfolio of what he´s done before. In this situation is a portfolio not something to take for granted and the question is a bit rude. The works he has done are placed around in the village of Arugam Bay. Niklas sound is snobbish like a blasé person in the art industry when an unknown artist wants to show his works. The artist then tries to show examples of his creativity without showing any traditional portfolio. A bit later he brings with him an old satellite dish which he explains that he can make a spectacular sign of putting on the ridge of the building. The weeks and even months while <i>Surfing The Nations</i> are in Arugam Bay, the letters we erased from the window aren´t getting replaced in any way. The surface remains clean.</div>
<div class="p8">
<span class="s1"></span><br /></div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: left;">
When I arrive in Sri Lanka and for the first time meet the group from Surfing The Nations at the Airport in Colombo, I wear a silver crucifix in a thin silver chain around my neck. It´s a crucifix I received as a gift from my classmates at Konstfack when I turned 30 years old. That I would work with this project was a reason for giving me the crucifix. They wanted me to remember them and that I would rather think of art than of God and religion. However, they were worried that I would disappear into <i>Surfing The Nations</i> organization when I took a break from the studies at Konstfack for this.</div>
<br />
<div class="p1" style="text-align: left;">
Later on-site in Sri Lanka, I was told, by others in Surfing The Nations, to remove the crucifix from my neck. It was because a crucifix could make it more difficult to meet the locals and be seen friendly in Arugam Bay.</div>
<div class="p2" style="text-align: left;">
<span class="s1"></span><br /></div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: left;">
From the beginning, before we changed anything in the room, it was very organic in the aesthetics with posters hanging here and there is a variation on the walls. When we considered ourselves finished with the hairdressing salon a few days later, the room looks a bit like a more extreme IKEA interior. When I later show a video from our work in the hairdressing salon, it is a common response from the audience that they get a bad feeling in their gut and stomach. And what was done there in Sri Lanka can be seen and understood as a kind of abuse by design as a medium.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></div>
<div class="p2" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: left;">
In the book <i>Don´t waste your life</i>, that I found in the organization's little Christian library in Arugam Bay, I read a criticism of postmodernism. It was a book that was popular to read in our group.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>John Piper, who wrote the book, quotes the author C.S Lewis in a part where he is trying to explain why he thinks postmodernism is the wrong way to go:</div>

<div class="p1" style="text-align: left;">
<i>You can ́t go on ”seeing through” things forever. The whole point of seeing through something is to see something through it. It is good that the window should be transparent, because the street or garden beyond it is opaque. How if you saw through the garden too? It is no use trying to ”see through” first principles. If you see through everything, then everything is transparent. But a wholly transparent world is an invisible world. To ”see through” all things is the same as not to see.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></i></div>
<div class="p2" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: left;">
Ideas about taste as true values are common in our group. Our group is convinced that, objectively, it looks much better in the hairdressing salon after we repainted. Something that people who have been an audience for my video rarely agreed with. I have never heard anyone say: Wow! The Barbershop became really nice! Instead, I have heard expressions of uneasiness and unpleasant feelings. To understand the uneasy feeling and see why I think a deconstruction of the context is required here. I read the C.S. Lewis quote in this context as a simplification. A logic that is not at all transferable to the criticism of postmodernism and its way of deconstructing truths and values. Deconstructing something doesn´t mean that it ceases to exist or stops being meaningful. Instead, theoretical deconstructions help to make understandable what you see and why you understand it in a certain way. The world is out there and it is opaque in a lot of senses.</div>

Why is one of the largest and fancier galleries in the world doing an exhibition on a surf family?<br />
<br />
Why is <span style="color: #e06666;"><a href="https://gagosian.com/exhibitions/2019/the-fletcher-family-a-lifetime-in-surf/" target="_blank"><span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; color: black;">Gagosian</span></a><span style="color: #e06666;"> </span></span>doing an exhibition with #fletcherDNA as the hashtag and the overall title: The Fletcher Family – A Lifetime in Surf? The exhibition is on Madison Avenue in New York. Vice Magazine has been writing this about the skateboarder Greyson Fletcher who is the youngest guy in the family: ”Greyson is more than just a skater, he´s the fourth generation of a bloodline that has produced some of the most influential surfers ever. ” I´m questioning. What does this have to do with art at all? Is this art?; Four generations of great surfers in a family.</div>

When I saw the surf film <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUdfdf25kz0"><span style="background-color: #f3f3f3; color: black;">Last Name First</span></a> from 2010, I got into similar thoughts on how being a great surfer is rather about situation, circumstances, environment, and privileges than about the DNA and bloodlines. Last Name First is a surf-film only featuring professional surfers who are brothers. I don’t believe that some people are natural-born surfers. And to do an art-exhibition with that as a score focusing on family and #fletcherDNA is something I find strange, conservative & also very problematic. As well it is superficial and lacks criticality.<br />
<br />
You need to be in a situation that allows you to spend a lot of time surfing waves instead of doing other things to become a professional surfer. I dare to say that being a surfer is a matter of class. And I would say that the surf scene is taking place in similar upper-class environments like golf, sailing, and art.</div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">You can make art out of surfing as a subject or material. You can do art out of any material and subject, but to be a great surfer is about being a great surfer. To say that it´s the same thing as being a great artist is naive. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><i>The practice of the artist . . . is no different than that of the surfer, who inscribes his or her self in the ocean—a bigger canvas could not be engaged, defining their humanity in the most personal way, using themselves to draw their lifelines through the massive fleeting freedom of that power. The power and majesty of the sea—Herbie shared that with me and with my family as well as his own.</i></span><br />

<br />
<br />
Wave surfing is originally a Polynesian sport and tradition with its first historical beginning in Hawaii. It’s being told that Hawaiians themselves mainly described and focused on surfing as an art form integrated into their culture. In addition, some who tell the story says that the first and most surfers were women. When missionaries from Scotland and Germany arrived in Hawaii in 1821, they banned and downplayed a number of Polynesian traditions and cultural practices. This also included wave surfing. The number of active surfers were limited to very few and surfing as an art form was about to completely die out.<br />
<br />
Surfing as a cultural phenomenon back then was something different from how it is today. In the contemporary situation surfing is more mainstream, an ideal and something commercial more globally. To say that surfing is automatically art within the contemporary art-scene is conservative.<br />
<br />
A Lifetime in surf is a celebration of a book with the same title about the Fletcher family. It is written by Dibi Fletcher, and with no further explanation is Dibi Fletcher being called the matriarch of surfing´s first family by her Husband Herbie and media. Mentioned about the book is also surfing as a counterculture from 1950s until today. How surfing has the possibility of both being viewed upon as counterculture and mainstream culture at the same time is interesting and something of a mystery. No matter how popular surfing is surfers consider themselves alternative and counterculture. I haven't read the book yet but will do soon.<br />
<br />
Surfing is great fun and amazing! But it is not art just like that. And it’s not about bloodlines or DNA.<br />
